LIGHT ON THE DARK SIDE(S) OF THE INTERNET

Companies fight against new cyber attacks every day. Criminals make headlines in the media that shouldn’t exist. It is often made far too easy for the informal economy. But there is another way!

In theory, cyber security is very important to many. In practice, it is often very different: any company can be the target of attacks that have an extremely negative impact on day-to-day business, reputation and finances. Possible consequences include loss of data, theft of money and trade secrets, and disruption to business operations. Due to limited resources and the lack of skilled workers in the IT security area, it is all the more important that companies focus on the most important risks and take tailor-made protective measures.

Almost all victims poorly prepared
“Unfortunately, 99% of incidents occur in companies that are little or not at all prepared for such crises,” warns Jürgen Weiss, CEO of ARES Cyber Intelligence GmbH from Traun. In the last two years he has overseen more than 150 operations with his team of specialists and has been able to help many affected companies out of distress. His areas of expertise are negotiation and profiling of cybercriminals.

First aid – 24/7 on duty
The ARES team can hardly think of “classic” family life or free weekends. Cyber attacks often happen on long weekends or window days. This is the “super meltdown” – panic begins and those affected often do not know who can help. “We must immediately clarify what data was really stolen and what claims are involved. This is the only way we can get a complete picture of the situation and develop further steps in our defense strategy,” reports Weiss. Headlines in the media often compound the damage. The CEO knows how the criminals work and how they need to achieve their revenue goals. ARES offers a special platform for digital first aid at: www.myincident.ai

Prevention is better than damage limitation
Not only the fire brigade understands: Preventing fires is often easier than extinguishing them. In addition to acute crisis operations, ARES also carries out penetration tests and red team operations (covert attacks without available information). The latter corresponds to the tactics of cybercriminals: Remain inconspicuous in the network for as long as possible, tap data and prepare it for blackmail – and then encrypt the IT infrastructure. Weiss recommends: “Ensure regular backups in an external data center, install new security updates and train your employees in the correct use of e-mail and the Internet.” Spotting Achilles’ heels with pinpoint

accuracy
A company that bears the Greek god of war in its name naturally pursues the highest standards when it comes to defense and finding weak points. The instruments used are exemplary: Proactive monitoring (spying out) on the Internet/Darknet as an early warning system, observing all social media platforms and channels, especially various forums and marketplaces on the Darknet, as well as so-called ‘IRC – Internet Relay Chats’ (e.g . Telegram)”, explains Weiss: “Based on our findings, we can also develop emergency plans. We are a digital bodyguard and support the IT team in the company with advice and action – preferably before an attack even happens. As part of a subscription model, we continuously check security systems for weak points and provide reliable support to our customers – you too soon!”
